Daily Life Wellness | Link Typhoon, 9-17/10

Welcome back to the life wellness Link Typhoon. Been awhile.

For those of you familiar with the way things work around these parts, you know that I use a Posterous blog as a kind of “news feed” and post there almost daily. The more lengthy thoughts and topics are covered here. And everything is fed into Facebook on the Daily Life Wellness page.

It’s all one big happy circle of health and fitness-related goodness.

The weekly Link Typhoon will still capture the newsy health/wellness/fitness stuff from the week, but will now include the recaps from the Posterous blog for those who would rather just get everything here.

Plus I’ll add some random chestnuts like “exercise of the week” videos, etc.

Hopefully that makes sense. In any case we’ll see how it goes.

So let’s get on with the linking:

‘Magic Mushroom’ Might Help Cancer Patients This has been a popular post on Posterous this week. Seems everyone wants to know about the ‘shrooms. In a small study, researches gave a “controlled dose” of ‘shrooms to folks with advanced cancers. Patients reported improved moods long after the single dose was administered.

When Does Old Age Start? Apparently scientists have “discovered” that old age no longer starts at 65! With folks living longer and healthier these days, 65 just isn’t the same as it used to be.

Plenty of Flu Vaccine Available. So Get On It. I’ve mentioned this already but it bears repeating: Go ahead and get your flu vaccine — and soon. This year you get protected against swine (H1N1) and two more strains, including the potentially dangerous H3N2 variety — all in the same single dose.

Corn Syrup Producers Want Extreme Makeover In a bid to wipe the slate clean and improve their much-maligned image, high fructose corn syrup makers are changing the sweetener’s name to…corn sugar. Nice try. Still the same nasty stuff.

Could This Be the Number One Most Ridiculous Fat Loss Method Ever? New device clamps down on your love handles and freezes your fat cells so they die a natural death. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. Oh…and it will only cost you a cool $3,000.

Exercise of the Week: Parallel Bar Dips This has become one of my favorites lately, as part of an overall strength building routine. Works the triceps, shoulders and chest. Work up to 10 repetitions for three sets, then try the weighted version.

Enjoy the weekend!

Daily Life Wellness | Link Typhoon, 8-6-10

The dog days of summer…and I’m feelin’ a little la vida loca.

Let’s hit it…

Low Carb Diets = Lower Cholesterol While a typical paleo diet is more “carb agnostic” (as Robb Wolf would say) and decidedly not low fat, this new study provides some support for avoiding the low fat route. Although 20 grams of carbs per day, as used in the study, is in my opinion way too low – especially for active folks.

Should You Be Using “Performance Enhancing” Supplements? Not so much, says Whole 9. Real food, per the post, is a far more nutritious and effective performance “enhancer.” Personally, I’ll still be using whey protein post-workout. It’s a fast and easy solution when I’m dog-tired. But I do agree that, in general, food and water is all you really need — unless you’re into extremes (and self-mutilation,) like attempting the Badwater Ultramarathon.

Flu Vaccines Being Shipped Early …and the CDC is recommending everyone get vaccinated this year. (After last year’s swine flu madness, that’s no shocker.) However, nutrition and exercise should be your first line of defense against the flu…and colds, and disease, and obesity, and on and on. Get the idea?

Obesity Rates Continue to Skyrocket Nearly one third of people in 9 states are now considered to be obese — and that’s possibly an underestimate, according to health officials. Lots of fingers to point here, but a general misunderstanding of how grains affect the body is a biggie. But, Uncle Sam wouldn’t steer us wrong on eating grains…would he? Yes, he would…and he is.

Blood Pressure Linked to Weight Not Fitness according to researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Here’s a fact: 80 percent of how you look (body composition) is determined by what you eat. Eat better…lose weight…reduce blood pressure. Throw in some exercise to that mix and you’re rockin’ it, dude!

Recipe of the Week: Awesome Caveman Chili! This happens to be my very own family recipe…and, as the name suggests, it’s awesome. Plenty of paleo protein and veggies.

Exercise of the Week: 50 Yard Sprints. That’s right…sprints! Do 10 of these (with 20 seconds of rest in between) once a week and improve aerobic capacity and fat burning ability. Add in 10 pushups in between sprints to bump it up a notch. Want to take it even higher? Get some burpees or pistols in there as well…then go puke.

I dig this video. Nice work by “Jake’s Dad” on the direction. And a tremendous 50 yard dash effort by Jake here…

Borrow a page from Jake’s playbook and get some sprints in this week.

Daily Life Wellness, Link Typhoon for 7-9-10

Link Typhoon — Crazy Summer Heat Edition!

The last few days here in sunny NJ have been unusually hot — like 100 degrees plus hot. That’s hot even by July in NJ standards hot. So, that said, we’ll start with the all-important “hydration is important” link…

Drinking enough water during the day — especially on hot days — is crucial, and something that is routinely overlooked and forgotten by most folks.  The old 8×8 (8 glasses by 8 ounces, per day) rule of thumb holds true. More is needed when outside on hot days and if you exercise.

______________________

More Sleep Improves Teen School Performance: That’s the reasoning of a new study out of Rhode Island. The research suggests that by moving school start time back one half hour from 8 to 8:30 AM, a majority of the students studied got more sleep, resulting in improved motivation and fewer fatigue-related symptoms.

Could Cancer Screenings Save 10,000 Americans Each Year?: Yes, says a new report from the Center for Disease Control (by way of CBS News.) It makes sense, of course, that regular screenings would save lives.  But 10,000 is an impressive — and hopefully action-inducing — number.  Do yourself a favor: Get screened.

Scientists Discover Keys to Longevity: According to researchers at Boston University, your genes largely determine if you’ll live to be 90 or more. As far as I can tell, the study doesn’t cover the effects of exercise, diet and other environmental factors… but I’m confident that these play a significant role as well.

“Universal” Flu Vaccine? A crack team of researchers is working toward a flu vaccine that doesn’t have to be adjusted annually for different strains. A super vaccine, you say? Maybe… but your first line of defense should still be proper diet and exercise to keep the flu (and other nasties) at bay.

Another Win for Fish Oil: A recent survey shows that fish oil may work to prevent breast cancer. Omega-3‘s to the rescue once again.

Breakthrough in AIDS Research: U.S. scientists recently identified antibodies capable of killing more than 90 percent of all HIV strains. Vaccine one step closer to reality. That’s a huge deal.

Blueberry Redux: Lastly, if you missed the post last week on the wonders of blueberries, that ubiquitous summer delight, then please check it out.

Enjoy the weekend, and stay cool!
