Daily Life Wellness | Link Typhoon, 7-23-10

As we settle into the juicy meat of the summer months here in the Northern Hemisphere, I’m reminded of that warm weather jam, “Summertime” by Will Smith.

Hopefully, the summer heat and/or vacation schedule hasn’t kept you completely from your workouts. But if it has…take comfort in the fact that you can get back on the health and fitness horse anytime.

Remember: We have more than our share of obesity in this country…be one of the other ones. Get off your ass and do something.

Here we go with this week’s life wellness links…

American Heart Association likes red meat!: That’s right. Looks like the AHA has turned a corner and is acknowledging that consumption of red meat does not lead to heart disease and diabetes. Processed (aka, deli) meats are another story, however…

FDA recommends against broader approval for Avastin: I’ve been reading about this cancer drug from Roche now for weeks. Avastin, a breast cancer treatment, is apparently not showing the hoped-for benefits it once promised.

“Worst Whooping Cough Epidemic in 50 Years” hits California: Pertussis (medical name) is particularly serious for infants who can suffocate during severe coughing bouts. Vaccines for Californians are now recommended for anyone 7 years or older that was never vaccinated as an infant. Seniors and women of childbearing age are advised to get a booster shot.

Flu Shot…Without the Shot: Scientists have apparently developed a patch (think band-aid) comprised of “micro needles” that painlessly delivers a flu vaccine dose. Don’t rush down to the local CVS just yet — this thing is still in the testing phase and won’t be ready for a few more years.

Organic Food Buying Crib Sheet: For those who are constantly wondering (like me) which foods are the most crucial to buy organic — wonder no more. This cheat sheet (in full color!) shows you the way.

Paleo Recipe of the Week: Collin’s Shrimp Diablo. I’m really starting to love the EveryDayPaleo website. This is an easy (3 ingredients!) recipe, and a perfect one for summer grilling. (Too spicy for you? Then try this new one for Arugula Chicken Salad.)

Exercise of the Week: Rack Lockouts This is a good exercise for increasing max bench strength. The rack interrupts the eccentric/concentric flow of the normal bench press, increases triceps strength, and allows for strength gains through the midpoint — or “sticking point” — of the bench press.

Here’s a video example of a rack lockout. (It can also be done on a bench.) And, no, that’s not me in the video. I have no chance of benching that much…

That’s it for today, folks. Enjoy the weekend.
